Looking For a Particular Thing¶
Do you have a particular article or book that you are looking for? We call that "known item searching" - you know what you want, and you need to find it!
For example, let's say you wanted to read the following article:
Example
Borzekowski, D. L. G., EdD., Schenk, S., M.P.H., Wilson, J. L., M.D., & Peebles, R., M.D. (2010). e-ana and e-mia: A content analysis of pro-eating disorder web sites. American Journal of Public Health, 100(8), 1526-34.
- First, navigate to the advanced LIRNSearch screen by clicking the advanced search button to the right of the search bar on the LIRNPortal.
- Then, paste the title of the article into the search box. Remember earlier in this training when we discussed exact phrases? Because a title is an exact phrase, make sure to use quotation marks around it. For example:
Example
"e-ana and e-mia: A content analysis of pro-eating disorder web sites"
- Finally, change the drop-down button to the right of the search box from "Keyword" to "Title" and click "Go."
We told the database that we want to find items with that exact title, and it easily found the article.
Looking for a Particular Publication (Journal, Magazine, etc)¶
Sometimes instead of just finding a single article, you may want to find an entire publication (journal, magazine, newspaper, etc).
Do you remember earlier in this training, when we mentioned that you can search individual databases in addition to LIRNPortal?
Well, when you are looking for a particular publication, you will want to use the individual databases or vendor Power Searches because most of them include a "publication search" feature. This feature allows you to search to see if the database includes a particular publication.
For example, to access the publication search in ProQuest, click "Publications" above the search bar:
In Gale databases, the publication search is in the middle-right of the database homepage:
